Analyzing the data with basic statistical functions

When your model is complete, you can use Excel's wealth of statistical functions to analyze the results in many ways.

As a simple example, below we have calculated the average and median commute times from the Commute Time simulation.  The Excel equations are:

=AVERAGE(F10:F10009)

=MEDIAN(F10:F10009)

You will note that the average is significantly higher than the median.  This is to be expected, since the relatively rare cases of traffic jams cause unusually long delays, thus skewing the average higher without as significant an impact on the median.

Excel has many other advanced statistical functions, many of them available in the Analysis ToolPak, for performing a wide range of analyses which are beyond the scope of this tutorial.
